JOB TITLE: Design Project Engineer

GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Engineering and Design Department Manager, performs professional Civil Engineering tasks. Assigns and supervises the work of lower classified employees. Prepares construction plans, specifications and contract documents for road, bridge, culvert and storm sewer design projects from inception through final completion. Prepares cost estimates, reviews plans, and maintains pay estimates for the roads and bridges of Genesee County.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Participates in meetings with other governmental agencies, utility representatives, local officials, and interested residents to work out details of schedule, inspections, utility conflicts, and other potential problems.
- Meets with other engineers and visits project sites to observe progress or problems, prepares recommendations or changes plans as necessary.
- Using aerial photos, makes layouts of proposed route location.
- Designs projects from inception through final completion under the supervision of a higher classified engineer.
- Reviews consultant’s plans, designs, specifications and quantities for compliance with Commission standards.
- Designs road improvement projects which involve determining the vertical and horizontal lines, solving design problems peculiar to the project, designing appropriate drainage system, and determining amount and type of material to be used.
- Prepares cost estimates for engineering related projects.
- Participates in on-site inspection of the terrain to see where grades will be made according to design to determine if any adjustments should be made.
- Supervises lower classified staff and trains them in various skills supportive of engineering functions.

- Prepare proposals by assembling standard sections, writing special provisions and determining basis of payment.
- Attends professional engineers’ meetings and seminars and reads literature in the field to keep abreast of the latest developments and techniques in design, construction and management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience. Experience in Roads, Bridges and Culvert design, the requirements for State/Federal Road and Bridge design. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Michigan is desirable. Experience in Bridge Inspection and Evaluation is beneficial. Knowledge of computer software with emphasis on Microsoft Office/CAD applications.
Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
